とにかく,
i just got addicted to another jdorama.
this time its
花ざかりの君たちへ
イケメン♂パラダイス.
that's hanazakari no kimitachi e, ikemen paradise for you.
rough translation:
for you in full blossom, pretty boys paradise.
probably you'd be like,
"oh i've already watched the taiwanese version. been there, done that."
but i'm telling you,
the phrase 'once you've seen one, you've seen them all"
does not apply here.
so the storyline is pretty much the same:
ashiya mizuki (horikta maki) is a japanese girl living in the states who starts to idolize high-jumper sano izumi (oguri shun) after she watches him compete on tv. she later learns that he quit jumping, and goes all the way to japan to get closer to him. only problem is that sano attends osaka high, an all-boys school in which the main admission criteria is one's appearance. so ashiya diguises herself as a guy, and subsequently lands her ass in an entire olympic-sized pool of hot water.

here's a brief character intro:
芦屋 瑞希 [ashiya mizuki]-
the protagonist who pretends to be a boy. ashiya is a very fast runner, which caused all the dorms of osaka high to try and recruit her, so as to better their chances of winning the inter-dorm competitions. she chooses dorm 2, sano's dorm, of course, and by a stroke of luck, becomes his room mate as well. obviously, ashiya is in love with sano (which she tries to deny at first), but can't confess to him because she is supposed to be a guy. what she doesn't know is that sano has already discovered her secret. portrayed by horikita maki
佐野 泉 [izumi sano]-
an excellent high-jumper who quit because he was injured while rescusing ashiya in the states, and took this as a chance to escape the building pressure and expectations on his high-jumping career. he finds out that ashiya is actually a girl while overhearing her arguement with her brother. sano was very cold and distant at first, but because of ashiya's influence, opens up to his friends as time goes on, and eventually tries high-jumping again. he also grows to like ashiya. portrayed by oguri shun
中津 秀一 [nakatsu shuiichi]-
the soccer star of osaka high who starts to question his sexuality when he starts falling for ashiya, and thinks he is becoming gay. he actually comes to terms with his "homosexuality" later in the series. nakatsu is generally very happy-go-lucky and popular, and his dream is to play in the world cup. he is also an amazing friend, which can especially be seen towards ashiya and sano. portrayed by ikuta toma
those are the amazing 3 leads.
of course there are lots of other ikemen, like
難波 南 [nanba minami]-
the head of dorm 2 (ashiya and co.'s dorm). nanba is a playboy who always manages to charm girls, a fact which gets him into trouble sometimes. however, he has a serious, sensible side as well, which shows when he is caring for ashiya and his other juniors. nanba is also umeda's nephew. portrayed by mizushima hiro
天王寺 恵 [tennouji megumi]-
the head of dorm 1, which leads the karate and taekwondo boys. he is brash and rough, but is actually quite the nice guy. tennouji also manages to snag a girl from osaka gakuen's sister school (st blossoms), kanna. portrayed by ishigaki yuma
姫島 正夫 [himejima masao aka oscar m. himejima]-
the head of dorm 3, the drama people. he hates people calling him masao, and makes it known that he is oscar instead. himejima is a total drama king, and is very much a narcissist. he also always leads his dorm in doing stupid things with him, and the funny thing is they actually follow. portrayed by kyo nobuo
these 3 jokers form the sakura commitee, which is sorta like the student council,
and has the authority to override teachers.
the commitee goes into action during episode 9,
when nakatsu is falsely accused of cheating by a new teacher, and is facing suspension.
and of course there are minor characters like:
萱島 大樹 [kayashima taiki], who is the dude with a third eye, and also nakatsu's room mate and good friend. he is always reporting on nakatsu's aura. XDD portrayed by yamamoto yusuke
中央 千里 [nakao senri], the girlish guy who has a thing for nanba. he is generally friendly enough, but will flare up at anyone who shows the slightest of interest in his beloved senpai. nakao also set nanba up somwhere in the first few episodes, just so he lose all his girlfriends. portrayed by kimura ryo
関目 京悟 [sekime kyogo], the captain of the track team. he lets sano practise with them after he wants to make a comeback and stood by him through all the taunting of the other team members. nakatsu has a habit of messing his name up, often calling him "sekiguchi" or "kakame", anything but sekime. portrayed by okada masaki
[kagurazaka makoto], sano's rival in high-jumping. he seems like a self-centred ass at first, but later proves to be a much nicer guy then expected. kagurazaka also seems to clash with nakatsu most out of ashiya's group. portrayed by shirota yuu

now i can't help but natter on about ikuta toma aka nakatsu shuiichi.
i've watched a couple of episodes of akihabara@deep,
and i thought he was cute but he never really caught my eye until hanakimi.
omg, toma is the best thing to happen to this show.
seriously, the role of nakatsu is so him.
toma can show his natural charm, humour and soft romantic side at the same time.
i just fell in love with him during the first episode.
i'm now at epi 9, and the guy just draws me more and more with each appearance.
well epi 9 is the best constructed epi so far anyway.
those who have followed the series will get what i mean.
and if you think he shines on screen,
you should see him perform live.
toma stars in several plays,
including SHOCK, west side story, cat in the red boots,
and the upcoming two gentlemen of verona.
he is one of those triple-feats,
one who can sing, dance and act well.
and look damn good while he's at it!
he is such a rare gem,
and he deserves so much more than where he's at now.
the world definitely needs more of ikuta toma.
i am so gonna pic-spam him one day..

watch hanakimi, or you will regret it.
a few things to watch out for are:
> boy-on-boy action involving drunk sano
> nakatsu's "think-within-himself" scenes
> nakatsu's "homo janai" (i'm not homo) dance
i'm biased alright, so these all feature nakatsu.
